PlayStation 5 will be the first gaming console to receive an Apple TV app

It was long expected that gaming consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One X would get Apple’s TV app. Today, PlayStation has finally announced in a blog post that the new PS5 will feature it.

According to PlayStation:

“Enjoy Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, new and popular movies, and personalized, curated recommendations on the Apple TV app. That means users can enjoy Apple Originals like Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, Ted Lasso, and The Morning Show through Apple TV+, subscribe to premium channels and buy or rent movies and TV shows, and access past purchases from Apple. The Apple TV app will also be available on PS4.”

The Apple TV app is also coming to Xbox consoles sometime soon. Back in September, a member of the Xbox Insider program found the Apple TV app listed among apps available to test. However, the app wasn’t functional and disappeared soon after.

The app will be available on PlayStation consoles including PS4 and PS5 at the latter’s launch date, which is November 12. Microsoft hasn’t announced a date yet, but we can assume it will follow a similar timeframe.

Consoles have long been known for more than just gaming. PlayStation’s blog says “your PlayStation console doesn’t get shut off when you’re done playing games. Entertainment like movies, TV shows, music, and gaming live streams only add to the PlayStation experience.”
